Equity Market Update for - July 23, 2008

Equity Markets For The Day

The Sensex ended the day with a gain of 813.50 points, or 5.77% at 14,917.70. While the broad-based NSE Nifty climbed 236.70 points, or 5.58% at 4,476.80.

Major gainers were R.Comm (12.20%), ICICI Bank (11.64%), BHEL (10.92%), HDFC (10.92%), and SBI (10.45%).

Major losers were Cipla (2.21%) and Hindustan Unilever (0.65%)

Overall market breadth was positive. Out of the total 2,759 traded at BSE, 2,270 advanced, 436 declined while 53 remained unchanged.

G-sec market comments: Markets opened positive and continued its momentum due to  stability in the political scenario and lower international crude prices.

The 10 year benchmark closed  at 9.02% against previous close of 9.12%.

Liquidity was tight over night rates hovering around 8.50%.

Markets are expected to to cues from auction cut off and inflation figures.
